Rivers of a Lost Coast Trailer

Rivers of a Lost Coast is a turn of the century story about a handful of pioneer fisherman that carried their fly rods north into California’s remote north coast and gave birth to a culture that would revolutionize their sport. For a few of these fisherman, like Bill Schaadt, this fishing life style became an obsession, an obsession that would not accept compromise.

Satoyama: Japan’s Secret Watergardens

It’s no secret that I love Japan. There is not a single place on this earth that I have fantasized about visiting more than Japan. In fact, I probably think about Japan just as much (if not more) than I think about fishing on a daily basis. Even when I’m sleeping, I dream about Japan. I cannot escape it, and there is only one way for me to deal with this obsession- go there.

But since I cannot go to Japan, I read about her culture, I watch shows about her cities and streams. All the while I’m in complete envy. A great example of this was when I recently watched Satoyama: Japan’s Secret Watergarden. I can’t help but share the awesome wonder of such a place. I found all the videos on youtube, and even created a playlist so you can watch them with ease.

I’ve embedded the first video, but if you find it as intriguing as I have you’ll definitely want to watch the rest.

Fish A Japanese Obsession

I found this amazing documentary on YouTube about the Japanese obsession with fish. From start to finish it is very fun, tongue in cheek, and culturally informative. I had a great time watching it and dreaming of visiting and fishing all these places, but I couldn’t help but notice they left out Japanese bass fishing!

You don’t have to watch all nine parts if you don’t want to, but I put some descriptions and quotes in so you can get right to what sounds most interesting to you. However if you do, and I hope you do, watch the whole thing I guarantee you will learn some amazing things about Japan.

Part 1 of 9 : Here we meet the host and his team of local Japanese people that will help him through out his journey. Most of all we meet Aki, his guide. The first Japanese fishing experience is a restaurant with an interesting twice. There you can fish a pond in the middle of the restaurant and have your catch for dinner. The next day they head to to the Tsukiji fish market in search of Bluefin Tuna.

In the west we try to get as far away as possible from the idea that our pray was once alive. And in Japan they celebrate it.
