BBQ’d Tongue Eating Fish Parasite!

MMMM! Delicious! I love a good BBQ, but I can say with absolute certainty that BBQing a cymothoa exigua isn’t going to make it taste any better. That being said, these parasites do no real damage to fish they inhabit. And according to reliable sources, eating fish containing the parasite is perfectly safe.

Personally I’d be a little put off if something this gnarly looking crawled out of the face of my dinner, and so was David…

I purchased a 6kg pack of sea bass, cleaned and gutted four and popped two of them on my barbecue.

After about 10 minutes I turned them over, and after a further 5 minutes went to check on them. It must have become too hot in there for the parasite, which became visible half out of the fish’s mouth.

I didn’t realize what it was, so didn’t check to see if the fish still had a tongue. I’m not even sure if the parasite crawled out, or was pushed out as a result of the fish cooking.

We are not intending to eat sea bass for a while!!

Bass Season Is Here Ontario!

Its finally here folks, bass season! Makes me wish I still lived in Ontario so Jon and I could be fishing together again. Jon should be fishing at this very moment and hopefully he’ll be getting into some nice size bass. I’m sure he’ll have a report as soon as he gets back into the city. In the meantime, here are a few Ontario bass from previous seasons, submitted by Paul Williams.

7lb 3oz largemouth bass

With this fish, I wasn’t targeting bass at all. I was fishing for perch when I had a follow up from a big dark shadow after reeling in a small one. So I put on my big bobber and casted back out. To my amazement it took the giant balsa wood float straight under. Thinking it was probably a pike, I set the hook and loosened the drag to be ready for what usually takes place when you hook a nice northern. But much to my surprise, I watched my line start to rise quickly to the surface and then the biggest largemouth bass I have ever seen broke water with a giant leap.

Spring Is Here, Or Is It?

Well the first day of spring has come and gone. You’d never guess it though if you lived on the east coast of Canada as I do. We had several inches of snow last night and it feel more like January! Fortunately, tomorrow is April 1st, which means fishing season is open! I’ll be heading out for some trout during my lunch break, and if all goes well you’ll see some photos tomorrow. In the unlikely event that I get skunked, you can always check out our forums for other fishing reports around the globe…

48 Inch Pike!

If you read Fishing Fury with any frequency, you know how much we love our muskie and pike fishing. We’re always excited to get photos our readers, and we’re very excited when those pictures are of big pike!

Tom T sent us in this photo of a 48 inch (122cm), 25lb (11.3kg) pike caught by a friend of his in Canada.

I know you guys always like to see big pike pictures. Here is a picture that my friend caught 2 years ago on a trip to Canada. The Pike was 48 inches long and 25.5 pounds. The fish was then released after the photos. The pictures don’t quite do this fish its justice. It was an incredible fish. Keep up the good work on your website. – Tom T.

Eight Pound Largemouth Bass From Ohio!

Lets start the 2009 photo submissions off with an absolute pig of a bass. This eight pound beauty was caught in Northeastern Ohio by Matthew Reese. To put this fish in perspective, an average bass is no more then 2-3 pounds.

I still need to tally up the submissions from the last half of 2008 to determine the winner of a few Rockstar Lures, but in the meantime we making plans to give away stickers to monthly submitters, details coming soon!

The 900th Post Spectacular!

Ok ok, this may not be spectacular, but it is the start of some serious updates to our image galleries. Paul Williams was kind enough to send in a plethora of images, which puts him right near the top of the leader board for image submissions. In other news, we have reached 900 posts on Fishing Fury, 400+ images on Catch the Fury, and passed 1500 comments (not including 62,512 spam comments) all this week!

Ch-Ch-Cha-Changes

There are a lot of changes happening in the world of Fishing Fury, both on and off the site. I just moved into a new apartment with my lovely wife and son this past weekend, and Jon found a new pad last month. You’ve probably already noticed the changes to the site, some slight font changes, the introduction of a new tag system, and new buttons that allow you to share Fishing Fury articles on sites like Facebook and digg. Jon is always hard at work trying to find ways to improve the site so if you have any ideas, wishes or praises to send his way, feel free to leave a comment below.

In other news, year end is fast approaching, which means we’ll be giving a prize to the top contributor to the site. If you have any photos from this year that you haven’t sent us already, send them to staff@fishingfury.com. The person with the most submissions will receive three Rockstar Lures for free.

So far it’s hard to say who will win, but I’ll be updating out galleries with some recent submissions very soon.

Here are two photos Ken Reece (one of the winners of the Stormy Kromer contest) sent in of his darling daughter who will be sporting a pink Kromer this winter!

French Walleye

I know them as Walleye, some people call them Pickerel. Pierre, a fisherman from France who sent in this of his catch calls them Sandre. What other names can you think of for this wonderful meaty game fish?

That’s an everyday life pleasure to glance at the incredible pictures you digged up.
Here is the picture of a Sandre (in french), i think the proper translation is Pike Perch or Zander
That’s not a monster but I don’t think you already have one picture of this species on your website, it looks really similar to Walleye.
I’ve caught this Pike perche of 3.5kg for 71 cm in a small river of Normandy two days ago.

Beautiful photo Pierre! It’s nice to see that the fall photos are coming in too. Not that you would know here in Toronto. Not to mention google is saying its going to be 19C for the rest of the week.
