Ashley Rae And The One That Almost Got Away!

Ashley Rae of SheLovesToFish.com was kind enough to let me repost this amazing report she made of the massive brown trout she caught in Cobourg, right near where I caught my first steelhead. When you’re done reading this report please head over to She Loves To Fish and read more!

There are moments where blogs seem to write themselves in my mind while an experience is taking place. The sun shines a little brighter, the cool water swirls around my wading boots.. ducks taking off just downstream and flying feet overhead. It sounds to be straight from a book, but no – it’s fly fishing. This weekend was truly one of those times, and as I am writing this I am smiling while reliving it all over again.

Usually my blogs start off as a story and I save the best photo for last… but this time I am going to lay it on you right away. CHECK OUT THIS FISH:

My first ever brown trout caught yesterday here in Ontario, Canada. (Yes, mud on my nose! haha)

Brown trout are officially the most beautiful fish I’ve seen here in Canada. This one was spotted during a steelhead mission on a Lake Ontario tributary with my usual fly fishing partner, Mikey Fitzgerald. We made quite a trek down stream towards the big lake and began fishing when we spotted a couple trout.

Kype Magazine Volume 3, Issue 2- with collectable back cover*

Kype Magazine released their latest issue for 2011 and I’m lucky enough to have a legit print copy! This is the first year I’ve seriously targeted salmonids like steelhead and salmon. It’s a whole new way of thinking about fishing for me, and its great publications like Kype and Steelhead Salmon Trout Fishing that really help me understand some of the finer points. Not just tips and tactics on the fish I’m targeting but also about how these trout fisherman are every bit as crazy fanatical as musky hunters. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I’ve already read this one several times and the end is the best part.

You can also find Kype Magazine Volume 3, Issue 1 on our sidebar, just above the recent comments, and you can read the back issues on Issuu.com.

Once In A Blue Moon

Since I’m going to be a the Spring Fishing & Boat Show today, I thought I should leave you with something awesome and inspiring for the day. We’ve shown the teaser clip for Once In A Blue Moon, but this five minute HD clip is going to blow your mind.

In an unpredictable chain of events a mass flowering of the ancient New Zealand Beech forest leads to an excess of seed production. Mice and rodents take advantage of this abundance and numbers reach plague proportions. Incredible footage follows these rodents as they embark on a strange migration, attempting to swim across the expanse of New Zealand’s rivers and lakes. There they fall prey to the largest predators in the lake – monster Brown trout. Gorging themselves on swimming mice, these fish become extremely aggressive and grow to epic proportions. For a fly fishing Angler, this is the stuff dreams are made of.

I really wish I had the time and a few guys who knew cameras this well the next time Clive and I wen’t on a trip. I’m actually on the look out for some trout and steelhead gear this year, and might even get my line wet as early as monday morning in search of a species I’ve never caught in my life… I will try to post again this evening with photos from the event and maybe even some sweet gear.

Deschuetes River Steelhead

I had never heard of the Deschutes River before watching this video, but its safe to say its a name I wont soon forget. The Deschutes runs through central Oregon and is a major tributary of the Columbia River meandering its way through stunning scenery. The river is perhaps best known as one of the most productive trout waters in the United States and is a top producer of summer steelhead.

Check out Deschutes Outfitters in more info on fishing this incredible river.
