I believe I read somewhere that those marks you are seeing come from spawning battles. The males will stay close to the females moving into the shallows, and the reason they hit each other is for dominance. It makes sense to me because Pike are not territorial, and I usually only see the fresh marks in the spring and when fishing in fall seems the marks have healed up some.
