    Navionics GPS on your iPhone

You can now have full lake nautical charts for lakes in canada just like the navionics chip you buy for your fishfinder gps...

available on the iphone , uses your gps capabilities to mark your spots and lake structures ... this is pretty much what i use on my fish finders and the chip costs like $200 you can get it on your iphone for $9.99 !!!!

all in the palm of your hand ...

To be clear you're only getting the maps. So unless you have a new iphone 3Gs or a gps dock add-on (oh yea they're coming so just wait!!) you're GPS coordinates will not be accurate. The current iPhone uses triangulation of your signal between the closes three cell towers and judging by your signal strength to each your location is calculated. Even in the city where there are tons of towers I've often found that it shows me up to a block away from where I really am..

    1st gen iphones triangulate ...

if you have a 3g you have true gps

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs-3g.html

now if assisted gps isnt true , then the 3gs doesnt have gps either because the specs state the same "Assisted GPS"

correct me if im wrong ...

for me when i watch maps and see my location it moves almost 1:1 ... i dont think triangulated works that way ?

After checking both specs in detail, the reason why I was pretty sure the 3gs has a real GPS is because of the compass software. But after reading the fine print "Compass reliability may be affected by usage conditions such as nearby magnetic fields." its literally just a tiny magnet on a gyro or something.

All that said the new 3.0 firmware unlocks the dock, which will bring some third party gps modules. There have been a bunch already but required jailbroken firmware and all the add-ons were prototypes.

    see this video from 2008

All that said, if I had an add-on GPS i would buy the navtronics maps in a heartbeat.

Except for the fact that you will be even further from the three towers and therefore your area of detection will increase. So don't expect a one block radius out on the lake. And don't expect anything in areas where there are no cell signals.

So you’re saying that there may soon be a devise I can plug into my 3G iPod that will give it true GPS capability?

PS The new firmware is pretty cool!

There was a cell tower right behind where we were staying so I had a full 3G signal the whole time, it was awesome. Also judging by my preliminary tests the iphone GPS was very accurate on the water! Stay tuned for a real review later!

Thats why I love my Crackberry Curve.. It has full GPS built in.. In my area, I usually pick up 8 Satilites.. My car GPS usually only picks up 5-6!
