Yes you are right, they are a protected fish unless you have a treaty card (which I do). Even though I can keep them i do try to practice catch and release on htis type of fish for sure but due to the fact of some major gill damage I desided to keep and smoke this one. Hmmm good.
He was caught in the Mississagi River from the shores of the Mississagi Reserve.

Are they good eating? I assume they must be since they have been so popular throughout history. Living here on the East Coast our sturgeon species are like our wild Atlantic salmon (the few left). You aren’t even allowed to keep them long enough for pictures let alone for dinner.

They are really good eating!! Very meaty fish. I gave away 1/2 of it to my elders and family and smoked almost all the other 1/2. Left them in the smoker for over 20 hrs.....hmmmmm wishing i had some right now!!!

The whole fishing culture is so different here than it is in the UK.

Which is kind of funny since I think you guys eat a lot more fish in general than Americans do.

I assume it has a lot to do with the limited number of fresh water fishing opportunities in the UK vs the number of people who would like to catch fish. If you don’t have a very strong catch and release mindset then there’d be nothing to catch.

We’re lucky that the ratio of fishermen vs waterways is much lower over here. This allows most of our waters to be managed so that as long as you follow the creel limits the fishery can sustain harvesting.
