I've been using an 11.6 ft shimano convergence with a pfleuger president

Why so long a rod for perching? I've typically just used light/ultralight spinning gear with a rod no more than 7'

Yeah that sounds like a float rod, I've actually seen a couple guys run the convergence on the rivers out east.

You looking for one of these 30-40 foot long poles they use in the UK or just a standard rod?

like these? http://www.tackleup.com/match-and-margin-poles.html

Casting range. With a long rod, I'm able to get my bait out to where the boats are docked and slamming them. I also hook into a lot more jumbos further out than closer in. There are also a lot more gobies too close to the shore.

What kind of baits are you casting, small jigs?

Live minnows, not the tiny ones but slightly bigger used for bass as it does a good job keeping the dinks off. I've also had perch hit gulp alive (not sure of the type, it was yellow) while avoiding minnows. this spring I'm going to give artificals a try.

Hey.
11.6 would be great. what did you pay for the rod.
I want a longer rod to get it out there like he mentioned. Last year in the spring, the long rod were hooking into large ones, cause they could get out where they wanted.
Would have responded earlier, but thought no one was replying cause i did not get email notification, even thought it was indicated to send them instantly...

Hey Bettercallsaul,
Where did you pick it up.
Going to go on the hunt around winter time, and maybe it will be on sale as the focus is on ICE
That is if the ice ever arrives.

Sounds good... Ice gear can add up but oh well, anything can.
Grab your stuff and we'll head out together....
Pike on Couch or Cooks on simcoe, Perch, Lakers or Whitefish...
All alot of fun...

thats what i was thinking... that ice will never arrive this year. I finally got a good set of ice gears, even my present is a humminbird fishfinder+gps package for winter and summer usage. Wanted to go slam some whitefish at simcoe. just dont think there'll be much ice this year. today there's freaking thunderstorm in December....

Also, i find that i lack the ability to cast extra-long rods with a light weight. It feels like a whip, especially if the jig is less than 1/8oz. Might just be the rod that I tried... or most likely just me...

Gotta release the line a lot earlier on a whippy rod
