Toronto Islands Fishing June 2011

Hey, I'm new to the forums and to fishing in Canda. That's because I live in Brazil and I'm going with my family to Canada in June and I really want to go fishing in the Toronto Islands. But I don't know what types of fish to catch, what type of lure to use, which fishing pole + rod to buy and how to get my fishing license. I have had gone fishing here in Brazil and have cought some 2,5 quilo fishes. But It's different. Can someone help me and/or get a hook up with me when I get there?

License - You can pick up a license from any walmart or canadian tire, as well as just about any outdoors store.

Rod/Reel - Any medium action spinning combo should be capable of most species you'll find on the island. If you're going to target pike I would recommend using a leader, especially if you're not using a heavy braided line.

Lures - This would depend on the species you're targeting. Worms go a long way if you're looking to catch anything, lures like the mepps spinner baits are great for covering water, and xrap style baits are good for a slower presentation. If you're targeting carp thing like bread, corn, etc are the general go to baits.

I saw those posts, it was great. But how do you fish with brea? Won't it get all gooey and "disolve" on water and fall from your hook. And how do you fish with corn? Isn't it hard and won't stick with the hook? Here in Brazil I usually fish with pre-baked bread, because it's really dense. It's as dense as claydoh. I really want to know that secret spot! Sounds interesting. I've downloaded the map of the Toronto Islands and unfortunately I'm going to stay only one month with my family in Toronto and only visit the islands two times I think, so I need to know all the secrets.

The true secret to the Toronto Islands- heck the true secret to fishing is hard work. Now, I'm not trying to belittle you or anything, but really there are no "secrets" that are going to guarantee that you catch something on Toronto Islands. I proved this last year when I took Jamie Pistilli and Big City Fishing out to the islands. We got skunked- and I was basically the guide! As the day dragged on they got tired, the sun started going down and they had to go. But Clive and I refused to leave. We were going to fish until it was so dark we couldn't see anything if it meant we were going to catch something- even if the cameras were gone. That's what fishing is all about for us- hard work and the thrill of achievement when that work pays off.

Now to answer your other questions. You can make bread in to compressed balls that work pretty well for fishing (http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Fish-Bait-Using-Bread) and corn well, that just goes on the hook like anything else. I've even heard that adding or soaking your corn in vanilla extract will make it more appealing.

With bread you can pinch it onto your hook, but you dont need to squish it too hard. Corn is my top choice on carp, just buy a can of corn and put a couple of kernels on your hook, cast, then throw a handful of corn in the area to get them interested in feeding.

If you can get out to the islands in May, your chances of getting into some nice pike will be much better. Here are our recommendations for spring pike lures, with honorable mention going to the 5 of diamonds spoon...

Oooh, it´s canned corn. I thought it was the uncooked corn that is really hard. Yeah, here I fish with uncooked bread, that brown loaf.

Later I´ll post my fish photos from here in Brazil. Some nice Tambaqui. There was a guy that got 3 Arapaimas. So lucky. If it bit my line it would have broken easily.

You think I'll be able to land some carp next Friday on the islands? I just saw the schedule for spring ferry service and it starts on the 15th. Coincidently, a friend and I are both free and might take some time on the islands. Since everything is closed, I might just go for some carp, and possibly some bowfin if i can spot any. You guys thing its still too early?

If you read some of my old reports from back in 2009 when I lived in Toronto you'll see I targetted Carp quite abit. I managed fish to 30lb and would fish simple baits like bread, corn and tinned meat.
